“Would you Rather?” Running Edition

A few weeks ago, Lauren at Breathe Deeply and Smile did a fun “would you rather?” blog post for runners, and I have decided to share my answers today! I’d love to see you all answer these questions on your blog, too!

1. Would you rather run a 5K or a marathon?

This is pretty tough. I love how many fun 5K’s there are out there, but the sense of accomplishment after a full marathon is truly amazing. My answer? A marathon! Plus, the ‘bling’ is unbeatable!

2. Would you rather run a flat race in the heat or a hilly race in the cold?

While it certainly wouldn’t be a PR, I’d choose a flat race in the heat. While I am fully aware I need to train more hills, they still suck since they are the ultimate cause of my ITBS! Plus, this Texas girl is used to running in a warmer climate.

3. Would you rather get new running shoes or a new running outfit?

New shoes! I always feel as though I am walking on clouds when I put on a new pair of running shoes!

4. Would you rather run a race without headphones or without a Garmin?

Definitely without headphones. I actually rarely run with headphones anyway so this wouldn’t be a problem. I enjoy getting lost in my thoughts while I run!

5. Would you rather run on the treadmill for an hour or in a circle around the same street for an hour?

Circle around the same street. After recently learning from my Airrosti provider that treadmills are actually pretty bad for runners who train for races, I’ll take pretty much anything over a treadmill run!

6. Would you rather run a Ragnar Relay or a marathon relay?

Both are on my running bucket list, however, I’ll choose a Ragnar race! They really look like a blast. Besides, who doesn’t want to spend two days in a van with your 8 closest friends while taking turns running legs of a 200 mile journey? :0)

A runner's favorite compliment :)

7. Would you rather come in 4th in the Olympics or 1st in the New York City Marathon?

I would choose 4th in the Olympics. While coming in first in one of the biggest races in the world would be truly incredible, the Olympics are on a whole different level. Placing 4th on an international scale of competition would be crazy awesome!

8. Would you rather give up running for 1 year to get a BQ (Boston Marathon qualifying time) or never BQ but run as much as you want?

Getting a BQ would be really cool, but one thing I’ve learned this year during my injury is that I do NOT enjoy being sidelined from running. I would choose being able to run as much as I want. If a BQ is in my future, awesome, but if not, that’s ok too!

9. Would you rather run in an urban area or on a trail?

Urban area – hands down. Someday I may give trail running another chance, but my one experience with it so far was no fun….a lot of ankle rolling and you really have to concentrate on exactly where you take your next step. Plus, the idea of seeing snakes during a run scares the daylights out of me!

10. Would you rather have a headache during a run or a side stitch?

I’ve had both during a run before, and a headache is much easier to handle for me. Side stitches make me feel very nauseous.

11. Would you rather run in a thunderstorm or a snowstorm?

Thunderstorm for sure – I love them! Plus, like many southerners, I am a wimp when it comes to severely cold weather, haha!

12. Would you rather have a rest day on a work day or a day off?

Definitely a work day. You just never know how busy you’ll be during the work week, so it makes more sense!

13. Would you rather run just because or train for a race?

I LOVE racing and I love following a training plan! It keeps me motivated!

  1. I like this idea! I'm taking a short blogging break to get my act together, but I'll have to write one like this and link back to you for sure :) NEW RUNNING SHOES over a new outfit. I can find an outfit anywhere, but shoes are hard to find and more expensive!

  2. I hadn't heard that about treadmill running. I got my injury running outside.

I'm with you on new running shoes. I'm more excited about new running shoes than anything else.

    1. He just said since it takes away part of your run gait, it doesn't encourage good form so doing it for long periods of time over the course of training can take its toll.

      New running shoes rock!

  3. Fun post! I have actually run while it was snowing and it was quite fun! My sister and I were doing a Christmas theme virtual run so we dressed up in our Christmas running garb and ran around the neighborhood.

    1. That actually does sound fun...running in snow on Christmas would be pretty cool!

  4. Such a fun idea for a post! The thunderstorm and snow storm question is a good one, I have forcibly had to do both, and oddly find I enjoyed them (after) in a weird way. But between the two a snowstorm at night hands down. Nothing more relaxing than running through light fluffy snow with big flakes falling on you at night feeling like your entering a beautiful twilight zone:)
I am with you on the new shoes too, nothing better to make you feel like your light on your feet than new shoes!!!

    1. I know what you mean about enjoying something afterwards. I ran in freezing cold rain one time last year during a 13 miler and even though it was miserable outside, the run itself went really well! And I didn't need an ice bath since I was already so cold lol!

I guess I didn't think of light fluffy snow for running in here in Texas. You make running in the snow sound so fun and cool!! Now I kind of want to try...maybe I'll luck out this year and snow will come to Texas.

    2. Yes definitely sometimes what may not be appreciated during, I look back and think, man I am glad I did that, and oh the running stories to tell:) haha

Well if you do get snow in Texas, which I assume is rare:) May I recommend running in the early night hours if it is falling, it's a super cool feeling!

  5. This is fun... I'd actually have some opposite answers. I'd take 1st in NYMarathon!! That would be the best!!!
& I'd go without my Garmin - I HAVE to have headphones...
But we're the same on Ragnar... I think that would be amazing!!!

  6. Would be interesting to hear more about what your physical therapist said about treadmills... I don't have one anymore, though, and really like running outside - even though I live in TX, too, and, by the way, would prefer running on a hilly course in the cold rather than running in the heat! Plus, I really like trails! Ran trails today and didn't see one snake. Yay!

    1. That is great you didn't see a snake during your run!

My PT said that since treadmills take away part of your run gait, it doesn't encourage the best form. So running on a TM for long periods of time over a long training cycle can take its toll. Definitely makes sense to me!

  9. Cute post Lauren. I would choose to run a marathon over a 5k any day. I also would always choose new running shoes over an outfit because keeping your body healthy is way more important than looking good!

  11. I love this! I'll definitely answer all of these right next week & link back to you. For now, I'd say definitely new shoes. I'm tempted to buy new shoes all the time, even when I don't need them yet. :)

  14. 7. Would you rather come in 4th in the Olympics or 1st in the New York City Marathon?

Definitely 1st in the NYC Marathon! That would be amazing, I can't even imagine. I would be lucky if I could just finish lol. My fiance Steve is running in it next month so I am excited to go and spectate, but coming in first, omg what a pipe dream lol !

  15. Ragnar vs. Marathon Relay?
Definitely a Ragnar! I've did a relay extremely similar to a Ragnar and I'm hoping to do a Ragnar next year. Just gotta find enough crazies. ;)
