My Unexpected Hiatus

Hey y’all! Sorry I haven’t written in over three weeks now. I have been keeping up with everyone’s blog posts, but lost my writing inspiration for a while. A few weeks ago I was in Dallas pet-sitting for my parents and had a pass to use the gym near their house. I was so excited to go to some exercise classes for cross training! So one morning I went to do two classes – one hour of strength training followed by one hour of Zumba. By the time it was over and I had made it back to my car, my IT band was in pain. Bad pain. I took over a week off of running and cardio in general to let it heal. Unfortunately it caused my confidence to take a pretty big hit, and that is why I have not felt like writing recently.

Since I took that time off from over-using my legs, I’ve been easing my way back into running and things seem to be going very smoothly. I’d be lying if I told you my mentality has caught back up though. Every time I go for a run I feel stressed out because I am afraid I will feel a tweak in my IT band. I know that with each successful run my confidence will grow a little more, but I hope it is soon because Dopey Challenge training starts next Monday!

Pictures from my Labor Day run this past Monday – happy to be 4 miles stronger!image

I don’t plan on doing a full workout recap from the past three weeks, but just so you know, in addition to my running, I am still being very consistent in my stretching, core/glute strengthening, foam rolling, and icing. Here’s to hoping the road gets better from here on out! The countdown to fall/winter racing is ON!

On a much lighter note, I am so excited about mine and Robert’s Wine & Dine Half Marathon (and Jingle Jungle 5K) costumes! We decided to move our Ratatouille costumes to the 5K and change up who we’re going as for the half marathon. I can’t wait to show you pictures; I wouldn’t be surprised if I revealed them early, because I’m no good at keeping exciting news to myself!

Did everyone have a good Labor Day weekend? Mine was packed full of fun! Robert and I went to a concert by the Houston Symphony (free to listen from the lawn area…just needed to bring a picnic blanket) – they played movie music from classic Disney films! There were some amazing singers who performed along with them as well – everything from Pirates of the Caribbean to Mary Poppins to the Lion King!

On Sunday we went to a baseball game to watch the Astros play the Rangers. I’m not a huge baseball fan, but I do love the atmosphere (and food) at the stadium!

So overall, definitely a fun long weekend! Also, I really want to give shout outs to all who participated in any (or all!) of the Disneyland half marathon weekend a few days ago; I am loving all the pictures and costumes! And again, sorry for being away for so long, but it was definitely a needed break. Hopefully y’all are still out there! :)

QOTD: Have you ever taken an unexpected break from blogging?

  1. Yay, I'm glad you are back! Sometimes a little break is needed, when I took 2 weeks off for vacation I came back feeling really refreshed. I can't believe your training for Dopey is almost here....fingers crossed for a great training cycle!!

  2. Welcome back! If I go on vacation without a computer, I take a break from everything and just unplug. Good luck with training for Dopey!

  3. Yay! So glad you're back! A break can definitely be good, from blogging, running, etc. I know it can shake your confidence, but I try to think of it as a reset. A fresh start to see how far you can go from there. :) I'm excited for your costume reveal! Are you and Robert going to coordinate?

  4. Sometimes blogging breaks are well needed!!! I take a week off every here and there, I think this year I have already taken 3-4 weeks off total. I don't like to get to the point I burn out, because blogging is supposed to be fun:)
It's so hard coming back from injury and when things tweak in the wrong way, I totally understand what you are meaning when you say it hurts the confidence. I had a little tweak in my foot yesterday, so I am taking today as a rest day. Maybe it's needed, maybe not, but at this point I would rather be safe than sorry.
I think you have taken such a smart approach from getting back from your IT problems, I think you will continue to see improvement and eventually hopefully for both of us we will get the confidence back, I think that is just something that takes time...

  7. Guess so...
    anyways...
I had said that I hate you have a flare up - but hopefully its just that, a flare up. I have so many injuries, I go into every run expecting pain... don't know what's worse.
I can't wait to see your costume! I love Disney running outfits. I get so happy seeing them & it makes me want to run a Disney race even more with each outfit I see :)

  8. Yay! Glad you're back. I can totally sympathize with blogging hiatus' (I've been taking one pretty much all summer). I bet that concert was awesome. I need to get on the ball and decide what I'm wearing for Jingle Jungle and Wine and Dine. Can't wait to see your costumes!

So sorry to hear you had IT band pain return :/ As hard as it probably was to take a week off, I'm sure your body will thank you in the long run (no pun intended). I wish you the best as you start Dopey Challenge training, you've totally got this!

  9. I've been wondering how you've been! I think a break is good. I'm tempted to take a break from social media sometimes. It's good to clear your head. That concert sounds like a lot of fun! As for your IT band, you got this. Ok, you went overboard with the double workout, but you know what to do when it comes to running! Just relax and trust your training as they say.

  11. I'm so glad to see you're back, I missed your posts! I'm happy for you getting back on the horse after that little scare. I'm the same way, whenever something twinges I get super worried about it.
The Houston Symphony looks like it was so much fun! I love anything like that :)

  14. Take Dopey nice and slow! I'm like you - I enjoy the baseball game environment more than baseball per se. :)

  15. I was wondering where you went! So glad to hear everything is okay, even though you've been struggling a bit. All you can do is take it one day (and step!) at a time, and listen to your body. You've done all the right things, and I can't even imagine how frustrating this must be, but I know you'll be back to business and stronger than ever...these things just take time, unfortunately! :( Oh, and I've DEFINITELY taken a break from blogging...I've had too many moments to count where my confidence was shaken and the last thing I wanted to do was write about running!
