Weekly Recap 7/28/14 – 8/3/14

Happy Monday all! I hope everyone had a fun weekend – I know I did! It has been so great getting back into the swing of things for running. It also reminds me that I really need to get my training plan finalized for the Dopey Challenge in January. It’s only about 5 months away – eek! Does anyone else feel like this year is just flying? I can’t believe August has arrived already!

Training

This week I ran three times. Tuesday I went two miles while running 3/1 (run 3 minutes/walk 1 minute) intervals. I had no pain during or afterwards. On Thursday I went 3 miles using mostly 3/1 intervals (with a couple 4/1 intervals thrown in there to see how it felt) – and once again, no pain! I was excited going into my ‘long’ run on Saturday after that. I decided to do 3 miles again starting with a 3/1 interval, then moving to a 4/1 interval for most of the time, and finally ending on one 5/1 interval. I iced immediately afterwards just in case, and no pain once again! I’m not going to push too much, but I love seeing this gradual progress!

During my training runs this week, I also calculated my cadence (steps per minute) during the run portion of the intervals. All 3 days I hovered around a 186, which is great. Efficient running occurs at at least a cadence of 180 so I am really pleased! Also, my pace during each run was maintained between 10-11 min/mile, which I am thrilled about. (FYI – if you are wondering how to calculate your cadence, just count your strides for 30 seconds while running and whatever number you end on, multiply that by 2 and that is your cadence).

runDisney

Let’s move on to some other news from this week – I am sure everyone has heard by now that runDisney announced a new challenge during the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend in 2015. When you complete both the 10K and half marathon, you get a new medal for the Pixie Dust Challenge. I think this is really exciting, but I have to wonder since they had the 10K this year, why didn’t they just do the challenge along with it in January? It makes no logical sense to me – my only thought as to why they did this is because they knew they were going to move Tink weekend to Mothers’ Day next year (which a lot of people complained about), and they needed a reason to make sure it sells out quickly again (like it wouldn’t anyways). At least they finally made it official though!

Weekend Festivities

Robert and I saw Guardians of the Galaxy on Saturday. It was SO good and it is connected to The Avengers movie! If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it!

Speaking of movies, I finally saw Monster’s Inc. for the first time ever *cue gasps* I know, I know. I can’t believe I just now saw it, but I loved it! Such a creative movie, but really can I expect anything else from Pixar? They are fantastic.

Also, is anyone out there a fan of the SyFy network by chance? Robert and I enjoy watching their ‘B’ rated ‘thrillers’. So we decided to watch Sharknado 2 and all I have to say is LOL…they really outdid themselves with this one. It was hilariously ridiculous!

I knocked out one of my summer bucket list items on Saturday! Robert and I went to dinner at a restaurant for Houston Restaurant Week (this was our fourth year to participate…it’s definitely a fun tradition for us!). We decided on Americas (restaurant week menu HERE) for some Latin American cuisine. It certainly did not disappoint – the food was incredible! Here are a few pictures:

QOTD:  Have you ever measured your running cadence?

  1. I'll take the cynical side and say rD heard grumblings and implemented the challenge to make sure the races sold out. Though, like you, I don't think they would've had problems selling out the races again.

    1. I hate thinking that way about rD, but they are a business so it makes sense lol

  2. Congrats on getting your run back on, and with no pain!
I have not seen Monsters Inc yet!
I don't watch the SyFy channel but Scott does and I seem to roll my eyes at all the movies on there..lol. However, I had seen Sharknado last year and have been looking forward ( in an odd way) to Sharknado 2. I'm sorry I missed it! -M

    1. Thanks Meranda! I was weirdly looking forward to Sharknado 2 as well after seeing the first one when it aired last year. It is just a crazy concept lol!

  3. That sounds like a great week! I've never calculated my cadence but keep reading about how important is to helping you keep good form and short, steady strides. Maybe that will go on this month's to do list!

    1. It really does help! The TM in my gym is right next to the mirror so I can glance over to make sure my form looks good as well!

    1. I actually saw Monster's U in the theater when it first came out. I love it! Robert and I want to do MU costumes for a runDisney race sometime soon!

    2. MU costumes would be so cute for a race!

  5. I've been wanting to measure my running cadence but I always forget! Hopefully I'll remember next time. I CANNOT believe you just now saw Monsters Inc!!!! Monster's University is just as good as the first one too!

    1. Haha I know I can't believe it either! I have actually seen MU already (back when it first came out in theater) and love it a lot! I admit I like MU more than the first one though :0)

  6. I haven't seen Monster, Inc. either! I've seen Monster University, but someone missed the first one. It's on my Watchlist. 186 is a great cadence! I've been working to get mine up. I'm usually around 170. Definitely room for improvement. And yes, I feel like this year is already over. Where is it going???

    1. Glad I wasn't the only one for a while lol! It's been a while since I measured my cadence outdoors so I can only hope when I get back outside for running my cadence doesn't slack too much! I find it's easier to keep good form on a TM...but hopefully it carries over to the pavement!

  7. It's great to hear running is going well! Last time I checked, my cadence was about 177 on one of my runs. That's a fun feature on the Garmin 220. I like dulche de leche cake. I didn't even know cookies existed - I'd like to try those!

    1. That is an awesome cadence! I had no idea there were watches out there that could actually measure it for you. The cookies were soooo good - even better than the cake!

  8. I'm kind of torn with the runDisney thing and them announcing a challenge for Tink. I am doing Star Wars (hopefully, assuming I can fulfill my fundraising efforts), and I am stoked because it's an inaugural race and I'm doing the Rebel Challenge and the 5k as well, but I had my heart set initially on doing Coast to Coast with Princess and TInk and getting that pink medal. Now the plan is Star Wars and Wine and Dine, which I'm still excited about, just would have loved getting the three "Tink" themed medals.

But, I am glad they made it official with the challenge, and thought the SAME thing - that they needed the hype for moving it to Mother's Day.

    And your empanadas look DELICIOUS.

    1. That is awesome you are doing the Rebel Challenge! I will definitely be looking forward to pics/recaps from you and all the bloggers who get to run it next year!

I am glad I wasn't the only person who thought this about the challenge. I feel bad thinking negatively towards runDisney since I love them so much, but then I have to remember it is a business and their just doing the marketing strategy that works best for them.

  9. Yay, you had an awesome week and the Rebel challenge sounds great! I really want to see the Guardian's movie, glad to hear you liked it! Also, your meal at Restaurant Week looked great! Robyn and I used to go to restaurant week in Boston all the time, we need to get back into that habit, its a great way to try new places!

    1. Restaurant week is such a great way to find new restaurants! I find that the older I get the more I really appreciate a good meal :0)

You need to see Guardians of the Galaxy for sure - let me know what you think of it when you do see it!

  10. I'm trying to gradually increase my miles as well and also enjoy seeing the progress. Sometimes I am quickly reminded that injuries take a long time to come back from and I need to be more patient and realistic. And yes this year is going by too fast!

  11. Just NOW seeing Monsters Inc?!?!?!? There's new costumes ideas for you - right? :)
Love seeing you have running in your training now. Go get 'em girl! Stronger then ever!

We definitely want to see Guardians...hopefully this weekend.
The menu looks and sounds delicious. Can't beat that view, either. I will add this restaurant to my list of places to try in Houston! :0)
