Weekly Recap 6/30/14 – 7/6/14

Another Monday has arrived and another week gone by… which means I am one week closer to a healed IT Band and running again! Woot! I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend. Robert and I had a blast even though it rained a bunch. On Thursday our apartment complex hosted an Independence Day BBQ, which was supposed to be at the pool but they moved it inside the club house due to rain. The food was delicious, and they had a DJ, fun games and raffles! They also had bubbles for everyone, and I discovered that Leilani really enjoys jumping and biting at them – it was too cute!

Friday Robert and I took advantage of some sunny weather and went to enjoy lunch at the Waterway, which is a gorgeous shopping area near our apartment (and actually the same place of the finish line from my first full marathon). And afterwards we celebrated our little Malia’s birthday with cake from the Barker Street Dog Bakery. She loved it so much – here are a few pictures!

We were going to go out to watch fireworks, but there was a lot of off and on rain so we decided to stay home. Although I didn’t get to see an entire show, I ended up seeing a few fireworks from our balcony which was really cool! I also saw a guy playing with some kind of fireworks on the streets of our apartment complex and he narrowly missed getting struck. Scary stuff – I hope everyone stayed safe!

Saturday Robert and I were going to go to an outdoor theatre here in Houston as they were showing a sing-a-long version of Frozen! I was so excited about it, and then…RAIN. I love Frozen, but not enough to sit in rain and wet grass for an hour and a half!

As for workouts this week, they went really well; I am doing my stretches and strength training every day, and am working up a good sweat doing cardio in the gym 5-6 times a week. Physical therapy is going great, and I am very optimistic about doing a run analysis in the next couple weeks to get started on a safe training plan in August. In fact, I ran/walked a mile on Thursday without pain!

In getting closer to being back to running, I have become more aware about my food intake again. My summer shorts are a bit tighter than normal, and when I look in the mirror I notice a small difference in my body. Even though it’s only a few pounds, it is enough to give me a dose of reality – I have let myself eat far too many ‘pity party’ snacks while going through my injury. That is NOT going to happen anymore. Robert and I have taken action to prevent it by throwing out temptation food and revamping our grocery list. Our priorities are more fruits and veggies, and less processed food. I am also going back to counting calories. Sometimes you just need to go back to square one to get to your goal! I am actually considering adding blog posts regarding our grocery list and meal planning… is that something you all would be interested in reading? Please let me know!

QOTD:  How do you manage your calorie intake?

  1. I would love to read your grocery lists/ meal plans! I'm always looking for new meal ideas and that is a great way to discover them! I don't calorie count mainly because I'm doing so much running right now that it's not an issue for me, but if I ever did stop running I would probably have to. I know I do need to cut out some (ok a lot) of sugar from my diet and start eating less processed foods like you! I hope your IT band is getting better and better everyday! :)

    1. I am the same way. Healthy eating comes much easier to me when I'm running, but pull me outta my element and BAM, crazy diet lol!!

  2. Sounds like Houston got a lot of rain this weekend. Dallas didn't get a drop and the fireworks Friday were pretty nice. I hadn't seen fireworks for 2 years since I'd been traveling. I'm glad Malia liked her cake.

  3. Congrats on being able to walk/run without pain! That is such a stepping stone and you'll soon be on your way to running again!
I'm the same way, if I have unhealthy snacks in the house, I will eat them all. I try to buy healthy snacks so I eat more of those. I just bought some Kashi cranberry lemon chia bars that I'm looking forward to trying!

  4. I don't do well on calorie intake... I NEED more info on that myself.
I'm always loving people's posts on food so if you started that, I'd love it

  5. So happy to hear you were able to run/walk without pain, Lauren :) I gained a few lbs when I was recovering from my back injury post marathon last year. It's so rough being in pain and feeling antsy because you can't run like normal. I've used calorie counting apps like MyFitness Pal in the past to lose weight. It helped me cut down on snacking a lot because I knew I'd have to record it.

    1. Thanks Denise! Even though I am getting a workout every day, I do still get very antsy!

  6. The meal plans and grocery list is actually a great idea, I would definitely check back to read that! Especially since low calorie meal planning is something I am working super hard on right now, and I am always looking for ideas.
But I hear ya on the tight clothes, being injured I gained way too much weight. I haven't even broke out my running clothes yet because I know they won't fit. But I think another 5 pounds and I should be able to start to fit in them again (hopefully:)

  7. Such cute pics! I've been waiting for these! That is cool that your apartment complex hosts parties! I rarely over eat so I don't worry about my calorie intake but I have a sugar addiction so I am trying to watch what I eat from that stand point.

  9. My dog loves bubbles too, especially some of the flavored we got years ago at PetSmart (peanut butter, BBQ chicken and I forget the third in the set but she went nuts for all 3!). I think grocery lists/meal planning would be great!

  10. Ahhh, so much to comment on here! First, the picture of your doggy cake is SO adorable, I can't even stand it. We were getting a "dog-friendly" cake for my family's shih tzu for a few years, but other than the cute photo opps, it really served no purpose...he refused to eat it! Believe it or not, he's just a really picky eater.

Sorry your 4th was rained out, and that you couldn't go to that Frozen event. I would have been ALL. OVER. THAT. ;)

Most importantly, I'm so glad you're another step closer to being able to run again. I know it must be so hard for you, but it sounds like you're doing all the right things. Your body WILL bounce back!

Okay, so as far as calorie intake...I am going through the same thing right now. After running 2 marathons so close together, my body had just HAD it. So I gave myself permission to take some time off, and I really haven't been running all that much since March. Now I am definitely feeling it in the way my clothes fit, and the way I feel about my body right now...it's no fun. As I'm sure you know already, I've had a lifelong struggle with my weight, so it really freaked me out to realize I had put a few pounds back on without even realizing it! So I'm doing exactly what you're doing. You absolutely do have to go back to square one and just start being mindful of everything that goes into your mouth. Cutting back on processed foods is always a go-to response for me. Now that I'm training for a marathon again, it's really hard to strike that balance between eating enough to fuel your body and not overdoing it "because you earned it." Would definitely love for you to share your meal planning, I think it's something a lot of us struggle with!

    1. A picky dog?! I've never heard of such a thing lol!! I am glad you enjoyed the pics! :0)

Getting so close to the end of ITBS... I can feel it!

Honestly, I find it easier to just go back to square one over 'cutting back'. It gives me a sense of control with the planning and actual numbers. Having a goal of actual weight loss is too scientific to just wing it. I like seeing the numbers!

  11. oh my goodness.. that CAKE! I love!! My doggies would have been so excited over that. Wish we had a bakery like that here. I did make Pixie a few dog-friendly cupcakes last year for her birthday and she was so excited to eat them. So sorry about all of the rain, it got us too. Glad you were able to see a few fireworks, though! As far as calories go, I'm not really consistent with it, but I use My Fitness Pal.
