Weekly Recap 4/7/14 – 4/13/14 (And New RunDisney Medals)

Jump Rope Challenge Count: 3,600/10,000

Last week I wrote about how my left knee has been bothering me, and it made me realize that my training may not be complete. I honestly believe that the downhill portions in my last half marathon is what caused my runner’s knee. Once I am fully healed and able to run without any discomfort, I plan on using this new knowledge to my advantage. I need to run hills! I’ve been putting hill work off for a long time; since I first found out it is beneficial for runners to add to their training regimen. For some reason it intimidates me, but that’s not a good reason to NOT do it, and I guess I had to learn the hard way. I am just lucky that I don’t have an injury that will keep me from running for a long period of time.

This past week my knee did sideline me a little bit. Monday and Tuesday I was fine, but then Wednesday it hurt to walk all day. I decided to just do my jump ropes and take Leilani and Malia to the dog park at our apartment complex. They had a blast – it was a gorgeous day! Thursday I decided to try and run since my knee seemed to be fine, but after 2 miles I had to stop and walk. I walked at an incline for half a mile, then ran at a slight incline for another half a mile. I decided to cut my run short (I was planning for 4 miles) just in case, but my knee did feel better after my run!

The April fitness jump rope challenge is going extremely well. Turns out I am ahead of the game by complete accident. The first week of the challenge I was doing 225 a day rather than 220, and the last week I was doing 450 a day rather than 320. I guess I should go back and check more regularly what each week’s count is supposed to be, but at least doing more is better than doing less! I’m not complaining at all – I can feel my calves getting stronger. It takes more and more jumps each day to feel the soreness I felt after only 225 jumps at the start of the month!

Excited about my developing calf muscles!image

In other awesome news, runDisney released photos for new anniversary medals at Disneyland for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration! I found these photos of the 2014 Wine & Dine Half Marathon (5th Anniversary), and the 2015 Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge (10th Anniversary) via Patty at My No Guilt Life. She found the photo from blogger Amanda Tinney’s Instagram. Both are spinner medals, and I LOVE them. The best part? I actually get to earn both of these medals in November 2014 and January 2015!! I hope we get a look at next year’s Dopey Challenge medal soon, too!

  2. I need to do some hill training too. There are zero hills where I live which is a problem, I'll have to do most of that training when I visit my family in Ohio this summer! I can't wait to get the new Wine & Dine medal, it's soo pretty!

    1. I don't have a lot of hills around me either, but hill training would be pretty simple on a treadmill (though I'd definitely prefer to run outdoors any day lol)! We need to plan a meet-up for some Food & Wine Festival hopping during Wine & Dine later this year!

    1. YAY that is so exciting! We are thinking Animal Kingdom Lodge if we can get a good rate through renting DVC points. If not, we'll probably go with Port Orleans French Quarter or POP! Do you know where y'all are staying yet?

  4. Hills can do a doozy to your knees... & your back... & your legs :) Hills are just a doozy!
Look at those calves! You go girl!!!
Hope your knee heels up quickly & you're back at it. Have you ever tried KT Tape? its what I always says holds my knees together.

    1. Haha so very true! Thanks Rebecca :0)

I have not tried KT Tape yet... it seems as though when people start using it they never stop and I am scared I'll become dependent on it and I really don't want that to happen.

  5. I hear ya on the hills. I train with them because I have no choice in my neighborhood but it is brutal. They completely intimidate me as well.

Keep up the great work though, don't let the pain sideline you, with the weather getting nicer swimming would definitely help!

    1. That brutality is helping you in the long run though! I wish my area had more hills honestly. Seems like I have no choice but to train hills on the treadmill.

Thanks Meg! I'll definitely be swimming more once the summer weather hits!

  6. Gorgeous medals! Love the calf "selfie" - it makes me smile just picturing the conversation that goes into getting a picture like that :)

    1. Bahahaha I wondered if anyone would comment about that. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Hey babe, can you do me a favor?
      Robert: Yup, what's up?
Me: Can you take a picture of my calves?
      Robert: Yup
*Robert takes a few pictures until I confirm he got the right angle*
      Me: Thanks!

I guess he's used to me making silly requests? lol :0)

  7. Glad your knee is feeling better! I wasn't loving the new Wine & Dine bling at first but now it's growing on me which has made me start plotting a way to find registration...I'm going to get myself into trouble!

  9. I'm glad your knee's are on the mend. It probably was the downhill, if your not used to running downhill and don't lean into it enough, it can cause knee problems, a tip if you have other hilly races, practice running downhill, you just need to slightly lean into it more and let the quads take the pressure off the knee's, and then they shouldn't bother you anymore. I live in Utah, so that is all I have is hills, which I love them but thankfully no knee problems after my dad taught me how to run down them:) Good luck, with fast mending!!!
