Recap: Nike Women’s Half Marathon Expotique & #RunnersLove Meet-Up

Last Friday Robert and I headed to Washington D.C. for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon. On Saturday morning, we woke up and got ready to head to Georgetown for two amazing festivities; the #RunnersLove meet up, and the race Expotique!

Our first stop for the day was Sprinkles Cupcakes for the meet up. I cannot begin to explain how fun this experience was – I finally was able to meet so many amazing women, who I had only known through the internet, in person! All of them were incredible and I can’t wait to see them again! We talked, laughed, ate cupcakes, and just generally enjoyed each other’s company. Thank you so much Meg and Kristy for hosting this meet up!

The DELICIOUS cupcakes Robert and I split – we got the Smore’s (my favorite), Peanut Butter Chocolate, Chocolate Marshmallow, and Cinnamon Sugar flavors100_1012

After the meet up, we headed to the race Expotique. It was so much fun, but not completely what I expected either. Usually at race expos, there are a lot of vendors selling different kinds of products. At this particular expo, Nike had a booth for a run analysis and photo ops, then they had booths for their sponsors only. Nuun was there, which I loved since they are one of my favorite sources of electrolytes, and you got to sample a bunch of flavors (I LOVE the Tri-Berry and Cherry Limeade). Paul Mitchell was also there, and they had stylists braiding all the ladies’ hair, which I thought was such a great idea! With it being a women’s focused race, having Paul Mitchell there I thought was genius – I mean, what girl doesn’t enjoy getting her hair done?!

My favorite photo from the expo

After visiting the Paul Mitchell booth – kind of a Sound of Music look, huh?!image

While I was getting my hair done, Robert visited the Luna Bar booth to make a spectator sign. Can I just say how awesome my husband is?! I don’t know if I would be half as successful as I am now if it weren’t for him encouraging me to follow through with all the ideas that flow through my head!

Did you know that ‘Nike’ is the goddess of strength, speed and victory? I did not until I saw this at the expo!image

There was a big wall where each runner could sign their name and/or write a note – I decided to partake!image

The only complaint I have from this expo is that there were no porta-potties anywhere. The only restroom available was at a Starbucks, and they were really trying to deter people by saying that you HAD to buy a drink before using the restroom. Apparently Nike doesn’t realize there there would be 15,000+ runners hydrating the day before their 13.1 mile race, and that having restrooms nearby is necessary?

After the expotique, we went to Nike Town for some shopping! They had so much awesome race merchandise – I ended up buying a hat, sleeveless running shirt, running capris (with the same design on them as on the Tiffany’s necklace I got at the end of the race), and a running jacket.

My gear from the race goodie bag – shirt, shampoo, hair ties, Luna bars, and Hawaiian Crunch granola

Overall, the experience was an absolute blast, and I left excitedly awaiting the next day’s race! Robert and I headed back to the hotel so I could ice my knee and stretch, then we decided to get a quick and light dinner from Panera. I went to bed early so I could get a good night’s sleep before my early wake-up call the next morning – it was almost time to RUN D.C.!

QOTD: Do you enjoy race expos?

  1. I didn't even realize those leggings matched the necklace! Is it bad that that makes me want them?

    1. Not bad at all - that was part of the reason I wanted them, and I just love the design! It's hard to tell in the pic, but there are little specs of bright yellow and Tiffany blue in them too!

    1. It was so great getting to meet you too Kristy! I am so glad I was able to go, and am even more glad that you were able to get into the event and help host a meet up!

The tights are so cute and comfy - one of my fave purchases from the weekend!

  4. No bathrooms at the expo? Wow, fail indeed. And if I "had" to buy a Starbucks drink I'd need the bathroom even more. I love that the race bag was different. I've never gotten shampoo before.

    1. Yeah, as organized as everything was, I was shocked there were no bathrooms around. The Starbucks was so busy and the line for the bathroom was so long that they couldn't really monitor if people were purchasing a drink or not anyway.

I LOVE the shampoos. One is a lemon sage and the other has tea tree oil in it - they smell incredible!

  5. Sounds great, all except the part about no restrooms!!! What were they thinking? Seeing as this is known as the "Tiffany" race, I would have thought the race shirt and bib would have been that blue color.

So cool that you got to go to the #Runnerslove meet up. I will be sad that we will be missing it at Wine n Dine this year!

    1. I don't think they were thinking at all when it came to the restroom lol!! I was quite surprised at a purple race shirt too. I love the color, but also expected it to be Tiffany blue. Guess that was too predictable? haha :0)

I wish you could be at Wine & Dine too, but maybe there will be one during the WDW Marathon weekend!

  7. You already know I'm going to say this but I NEED those cupcakes!!! That's so cool they had Paul Mitchell braiding hair at the expo and such a good idea! I always want to wear my hair in a braid for runs because it gets so tangled in a pony, but I'm inept and can't braid my own hair haha! It looks like a blast and I can't wait to meet everyone in November!

    1. I knew you'd love the cupcake picture :0) Robert and I were going to share them all, but I totally ate the entire Smore's one. I felt sort of kind of bad (not really) about eating it all, but it was my favorite! I shared the rest of them though!

November will be here before we know it - I can't wait to meet you too!

  9. I am totally sold on this race (yes, yes, just from the expo, not gonna lie, haha)...looks like SUCH a blast! But sorry about the lack of bathrooms -- uh, are they crazy?! It's great you got to meet so many fellow bloggers, too! :)

    1. Man, all I need to do is recap the expo to sell people on a race lol!! :0) It was so fun, except for the restroom issue. Pretty sure my bladder almost imploded at one point - NOT fun.

I loved meeting so many bloggers. I hope we can meet up at the WDW Marathon weekend in January!

You absolutely need to run this race!! I'll be recapping the actual race soon, which was even more amazing than the expo! Spoiler Alert: They had a chocolate mile. That's right, they handed out chocolates during one of the later miles!

I have to say, I've made Sprinkles cupcakes with the mix from Williams Sonoma and they looked nothing like those gorgeous things you got! Jealous! Can't wait to hear about the race itself!

  13. Looks fun! I like expos - I've found some good shoe sales at the Houston Marathon expo. Sprinkles - yum! When I lived in Houston, I followed them on Twitter. Sometimes they let followers know about ways to get free cupcakes. That was great!

    1. Expos are fantastic - I always look forward to them. There is something about exploring new products and finding little pieces of running gold that I just love!

I'll have to follow Sprinkles more closely on Twitter. I am always up for a free cupcake! :0)
