Weekly Recap 12/30/13 – 1/5/14

Marathon Training Countdown – 10 Weeks Down, 8 Weeks to Go!

First weekly recap of 2014! I love the fresh start a new year brings, though it feels slightly different this year since I am in the middle of a strict training regimen. Every week the picture of me crossing the finish line of my first marathon gets clearer and clearer. I have 8 weeks left until then, and even though I know the hardest parts are yet to come, the fact that I’ve come through 10 weeks already feels amazing.

I admit though that this past week was very up and down for training. My mid-week running was fine, but Saturday morning’s long run ended up being painfully tough. I woke up ready for another 14-miler like the week before – strong and triumphant. The weather was even perfect! I went to the park to meet up with my Team RWB friends, and we started running. I had company the first couple miles for a warm-up, but then they began their own paces/intervals, and I kept on going. Fast forward a couple miles later and I already wanted to be done. In the course of miles 5-12, I desperately tried to zone out, and get lost in the rhythm of my cadence. Over and over I told myself to just keep putting one foot in front of the other until my Garmin said 14 miles. It was hard, especially when my brain started reminding me about the week before; you ran 14 miles before, Lauren, you can do it again. It should be easier for you now!

I had plans to go to breakfast with my Team RWB friends after everyone finished their scheduled mileage, so around mile 12, I passed a few of them waiting on the few runners finishing up (including myself). Luckily, one of them decided to join me for my last couple of miles, and I was so grateful. The company kept me distracted, and the extra motivation helped me finish strong, and I went the full 14 miles without any un-scheduled breaks (2 for water/Gu intake & 2 quick water stops).

As much as I wish every Saturday could be a perfect run, I know that it won’t always happen. But not quitting or giving up when things get tough speaks greatly in my opinion – hard runs can make or break someone, and I will not allow myself to be broken! I CAN do anything I set my mind to, and I am excited to take on 26.2 miles in just 8 shorts weeks!

Here are the stats:

And a very well-deserved breakfast with a bunch of my Team RWB friends!

Also new this week, runDisney was busy with announcements. As I am sure many of you have seen already, they have released the 2014 New Balance shoes! They have pairs based on Sorcerer Mickey, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Cinderella. I love the Cinderella ones, and hope I can get a pair at the Tinker Bell Half Marathon expo in a couple weeks. New Balance has announced that their goal this year is to NOT run out of stock, and to be able to meet all demand. I sure hope that happens!

For more information how to get a pair at the race expos, click here.

Next, runDisney has announced that there will be no meet-up for WDW Marathon Weekend next week. I have read, however, that they are not getting rid of these meet-ups for good! Maybe they will pick and choose which race weekends get meet-ups, or possibly even continue doing them on the road like they did in Atlanta earlier this year.

Lastly, regarding Tinker Bell weekend, the Kid’s races have been moved from Saturday, January 18th at 10 AM to 9:30 AM instead.

My workouts this week:

Monday: 4 Mile Tempo Run (Pace: 9:00 min/mile)

Tuesday: Stretching & Foam Rolling

Wednesday: 6 Mile Easy Run (Pace: 10:30 min/mile)

Thursday: 4 Mile Easy Run (Pace: 10:00 min/mile)

Friday: Yoga

Saturday: 14 Mile Long Run

Sunday: Stretching & Foam Rolling

Monday Motivation!

QOTD: How do you deal with times when your run seems mentally challenging?

  2. Whenever my runs get mentally challenging I always pause for a second and put my favorite song that always pumps me up on my iPod. Or I imagine myself crossing the finish line at my next race!

  6. Getting the bad runs out of the way during training just means the marathon itself will go well because you know how to get over that hump! That looks like a fun breakfast spot. :)

    1. So very true!!

It was a great breakfast place - they had freshly squeezed orange juice, which always tastes wonderful, but tasted especially good after that long run!

  7. I can't believe there is not going to be a Meet up for WDW marathon weekend! Personally I was wondering how they were going to keep this up when they have been adding so many races and time seems to be limited. They would have had to make the meet up on Wednesday and I bet that is a big travel day for most folks. They really should announce the meet up closer to when registration opens. This way people can plan their air fare accordingly. I am wondering the same thing for PHM weekend. The meet up would have to be Thursday and I know lots of people who will be traveling that morning as well. Maybe they'll do another night time meet up. That really wouldn't be ideal though seeing as many people will be getting up the next morning to run the 5K. (Boy I really have a lot of opinions on this topic this morning,,haha)

    1. I was pretty surprised as well. A lot of people have pretty strong opinions towards it... I can't say I do since I haven't ever been to one, but someday I'd like to go to one! I agree with you 100% - they should announce them WAY sooner. It always seem so last minute, and also is always on so many people's travel day!
