2014: New Goals for a New Year

Before I get into my goals for the New Year, I would like to do a quick review my 2013 goals, and give myself a ‘report card.’

2013 Goal Review
Run 2 half marathons: A+
I ran the Disney Princess Half, and the Wounded Warrior Half.

Run 600 miles: A+
I ran 720 miles total in 2013.

Run a 10K in under 55 minutes: A+
I accomplished a chip time of 54:55 at the Believe! 10K in November, 2013.

Run at least 1 timed 5K: A

While I did do one timed 5K (Color Me Cooper 5K – Trail/Obstacle Race), I did not run one for time like I had originally wanted to – it was just for fun.

Stretch every day: B+
I did not do it every day of every week, but I did keep up with this goal very well.

Strength Train 2-3 times a week: B-
I strength trained for a while with Jillian Michael’s DVDs, and then switched to Yoga towards the end of the year. However, there were some weeks during this year where strength training was scarce.

Foam roll twice a week: B+
I did this as often as I stretched.

Ice bath twice a month: C
Some months I did 1 or 2, some I did none.

Overall, I would say I accomplished all of my big goals, and I ran injury-free, which is something I hope to do for many, many years to come.

New Goals for 2014
Run Injury-Free

Again for this year I will strive to stretch and foam roll at least every other day. I also plan to do ice baths twice a month, and strength train 2-3 times per week (focusing on core and glutes). Finally, I am going to try and get a massage at least once a quarter in 2014; I believe more regular massages will help keep my muscles fresh and loose.

Run First Full Marathon

I am currently in training for the Woodlands Marathon, to take place on March 1, 2014.

Run a Faster Half Marathon
My current half marathon PR is 2:13:48, and while one of my long-distance goals is to run one in under 2 hours, I hope to at least get much closer to that 2-hour mark this year.

Run a 5K for Time
I would just like to see how fast I can run a 5K.

Complete a Triathlon
I ran my first sprint triathlon in 2013 and had a lot of fun! For 2014 I would like to do another one, either Sprint or Olympic distance.

Time myself for 1 Mile in January & December
I want to see how much of a difference there is after another year of training. Plus, I have never actually run a timed mile, and I am curious to see how I will do.

Earn a runDisney Coast to Coast (C2C) Medal
I will be running the Tinker Bell Half Marathon at Disneyland in a couple of weeks, and plan to run the Wine & Dine Half Marathon at Disney World in November to get my C2C medal.

Get ready for the 2015 Dopey Challenge
Register for the races, and research/begin a comfortable training regimen so I can complete the challenge in January 2015.

Volunteer for a Race
I have not been a volunteer for a race yet, and I would really like to this year.

Sing the National Anthem at a Race
Singing is a passion of mine, and while this really depends on a lot of factors outside of my control, it is something I would love to do someday, even if it is not this year.

Balance Eating Clean & Budgeting
This is something I have a pretty firm grasp on already, so it is more of a continuation into the New Year. Fueling my body healthfully is very important, and so is budgeting of course. A penny saved is a penny earned!

Here’s to a year full of opportunities to make dreams a reality!

QOTD: What are you goals for 2014?

  1. Wow, I didn't know you were a singer! I think you'll do great with your 2014 goals! I have never tried an ice bath. I don't know how people do that!

    1. Thanks!! Yup, ever since I was little! I did choir from 5th grade until I was a senior in high school.

Ice baths are not easy, but worth it for the recovery help!

  2. Those goals will definitely keep you busy :)

  3. Awesome goals! You've got these! Can't wait to read about your Tinkerbell experience...that C2C medal is my absolute favorite, you'll love it. :) Right now I have tunnel vision for Dopey, but after that, I'll definitely be setting some new goals for 2014! I'm with you on the budgeting better...gotta save money for these race-cations. And I still want to take on a triathlon! :)

    1. I don't blame you one big for having Dopey tunnel vision - that is a huge challenge! Yes, I always try to save as much as possible for race-cations :) Do you think you'll do a triathlon this year?

  4. Great goals! Had to defer goofy this year do maybe in 2015 well meet at Wdw!

    1. Thanks, Erin! We should definitely do a meet-up for the marathon weekend in 2015!

  5. You had an amazing 2013! Way to go! And I like your list of 2014 goals, especially the timed mile one. After reading your post I realized that I've never ran a timed mile either, at least not for that purpose. I think I may do this too!

    1. Thanks, Jewell! I got the idea of the timed mile one when I was reading an article about this guy who ran 100 miles with like a 7ish min/mile pace. I thought to myself, I doubt I could even run one mile at that pace. Then I thought, well, technically I don't know that - so I am curious! I may do my January timed mile this weekend.

    2. I love that it's so simple but I bet a lot of runners don't bother to do it. Sometimes it's just nice to go back to the basics.

  6. I love the idea of a timed mile! I've never considered that before, but you're right - it would be a great way to document your progress. You're going to have a huge 2014! - Jess

    1. Agreed - it should be a great way to document progress! A huge, and fun, 2014 is definitely what I'm going for :)

  7. Awesome job in 2013! You've got great goals for 2013! I'm excited to read about your prep for Dopey! I've also got the goal to run a sub-2hr half (not this year). :)

    1. Thanks Kim! Will you be at Marathon weekend in 2015?
