No Longer Only ‘Half’ Crazy

This week I officially registered for my very first FULL marathon! That’s right, y’all, I’m no longer just ‘half crazy.’ I have been talking with my friend Long, who has run quite a few half and full marathons, and is currently training for a half ironman, and he said he would love to run with me for my first 26.2! The race we will be doing is the Woodlands Marathon here in Houston, TX on March 1st, 2014.

I have been thinking a lot lately about tackling a full marathon, and knew that 2014 would be a good year to do it, especially since I have dreams to eventually do the Dopey Challenge at Disney World in the next couple years (for those that do not know, the Dopey Challenge is when you do a 5K, 10K, half, and full marathon in 4 days). With those thoughts, I chose an early spring race because the bulk of my long runs will be in much more ideal Houston temperatures!

When I clicked the register button on Monday, I have to admit that a surge of both excitement and nervousness bolted through my body and caused me to become slightly light headed. Long informed me that it is simply the “feeling of glory from your finishing the race in the future…rippling back in time to you now because that’s how immense it is!” If that is not motivating, I don’t know what is! It really caused those feelings of excitement to overcome any nervousness, and the thought of achieving this 26.2 mile goal is going to be FUN! Wait, fun? Have I gone mad? :0)

So, over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be doing a lot of research on training schedules, and choosing one that fits me best. I really want to take a conservative approach to where I will feel comfortable running such a long distance, yet where I do not run so much that I gain a higher risk of any type of injury. I also intend to make sure my stretching and foam rolling is even more religious than it is now.

So, if anybody has any advice on training for a full marathon, I very much welcome it!

QOTD: Have you ever done a full marathon? Do you want to?

  2. I would like to do the Marine Corps Marathon eventually, because my dad was a Marine and I think it'd be fun for him to see me accomplish that. But I have to get comfortable with a half first!

    1. Thanks Karen!! No, I unfortunately won't be running PHM/GSC next year since I'll be at the Tink Half. Probably a good thing now though since that'd be a little too much running for me in that time frame LOL!

    1. Thanks!! Disney will be an AWESOME place for a first full marathon :) The only reason I decided against it is because I really want my family there for my first one. I think my plan is to do the Dopey challenge in 2015 though so maybe I'll see you there!

  7. Sorry, I'm soooo behind on my blog reading! But I wanted to formally congratulate you on YOUR blog about signing up for your first full! I'm so excited for you, and can't wait to follow your training! You're going to kill it. Always happy to know I'm not the only crazy person who is subjecting myself to the physical agony that is marathon training, haha. Best of luck to you! :-D
