Austria Part 4 – Hiking the Krimmler Waterfalls

If you need to catch up on my previous Austria recaps, you can find part 1 HERE, part 2 HERE, and part 3 HERE.

On our last full day in Austria, Robert and I headed out in the morning to what we were both looking forward to the most – a beautiful hike up the Krimmler Waterfalls in the mountains. To get to the base of the waterfall, we drove up a winding road to some of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen in my life.

After about an 1.5-2 hour drive or so, we reached the base of the waterfalls. It was definitely a tourist spot, but rightfully so! I enjoy being around a lot of people, but as anybody else, I enjoy time of more solitude as well. Here we got the best of both worlds; hiking up the waterfall there were plenty of people, but once we reached the top and started to hike along the valley, people were fewer and further between and we were able to become much more immersed in the beauty of nature!

The hike up the mountains and along the valley took a good 2 hours, and it was VERY steep. I wish I had more photo evidence of just how steep, but trust me when I say that it was not easy, and probably burned most of the calories I ate that week!

After coming back down the mountain which took about 1-1.5 hours (much faster than the time it took to go up, but no less difficult), we drove to Lake Tirol on our way back to Mayrhofen. This lake was breathtaking, and with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, I could have spent all day exploring and admiring it!

In the late afternoon, we arrived back at our hotel for a fun evening inclusive of a delicious dinner and relaxing swim. Our last day was definitely my favorite during our trip! It also gave me a desire to travel to the mountains more, and maybe even start exploring a bit of trail running!

QOTD: Have you ever gone hiking? Do you enjoy it?

  2. Beautiful pictures, Lauren! My husband and I love to hike. We live in MN and frequent the North Shore and the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area). Hiking combines two of my favorite things - great landscape photography and a heck of a workout.
